If you are moving to Birmingham and love barhopping without rules, Birmingham law is now making that possible.
According to WVTM 13, until this month it has been illegal to walk around with open containers in Birmingham’s Uptown. However, the Uptown Entertainment District, BJCC, and the Sheraton and Westin hotels will now allow visitors to walk around with open containers – a decision that a lot of nighttime Uptown frequenters are happy to hear.
Bottle and Bone server Tate Polluck said that he has high hopes that the passage of the new law will draw more customers in to not only Bottle and Bone, but to all establishments and entertainment venues in Uptown. Starting at 5 p.m., patrons of the entertainment district can purchase a drink at one bar and carry it on the streets to another bar.
Another local mentioned that it takes her back to her days of living in Florida, “going from bar to bar outside.” However, a lot of famous bar hopping areas in Florida have been getting rid of the law, making rules and regulations that prohibit open containers outside of establishments. Why? Among the many reasons are: customers not sticking around at one establishment (bad for business), it results in belligerence in the streets, and if glass bottles are dropped on the sidewalks it poses a safety hazard. This leaves Birmingham movers skeptical as to whether the new law will stick around or not.
