To celebrate one of civil rights’ most iconic activists, Martin Luther King Jr. Day will fall on Monday, January 18 this year, and if you have kids they will likely be out of school. The following are local places you can take family to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Birmingham:
Birmingham Civil Rights Institute – Located at 520 16th Street N., The BCRI opens at 9 a.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and offers tours of its galleries for free. The galleries include famous photographs of important moments in history and other civil rights artifacts.
Birmingham Zoo – If you haven’t visited the zoo since moving to Birmingham, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the perfect time to go! Guests who bring a can of non-perishable food will receive half-off admission; limit one per person. Birmingham Zoo includes hundreds of different animals, along with carousel rides, train rides, sea lion training, and an interactive giraffe keeper chat.
30th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast – Presented at Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, this is the largest gathering of local organizations supporting the vision of racial resolution in Birmingham. If you have recently moved to Birmingham and are interested in learning more about past and present community programs, this is a great event to attend and become familiar with local organizations that share a similar focus. Registration is $30 per person and the event starts at 7:30 a.m.
